Empowerment through employment

The Jericho Foundation is a charity that exists to help disadvantaged people overcome social barriers and get back into employment.

It was originally established as a drop-in centre in Balsall Heath in Birmingham in 1993, and today operates six social enterprises under the umbrella of its trading arm Jericho Community Interest Company (CIC). This enables it to generate income while providing paid work experience to over 250 people each year.

Its enterprises include:

  • Jericho Construction - provides a wide range of building and related services from general repairs to new build and refurbishment projects.

  • Jericho Design Studio - produces print work and multimedia projects including e-commerce websites.
It also offers marketing and PR services.

  • Jericho Print & Promotion - offers printing and promotional items ranging from t-shirts to wallets.

  • Jericho Catering - prepares lunch buffets for up to 50 people and operates a cafe at Jericho's main premises offering hot and cold food, snacks and beverages
    to the local community.

  • Jericho Contract Cleaning - provides cleaning services to local businesses, community groups and individual households.

  • Jericho Landscape - provides grounds maintenance, hard and soft landscaping and tree surgery to a range of customers from the public and third sectors.

The majority of those that undertake work experience are from the most deprived wards of Birmingham and Rochdale and many are multiple disadvantaged. Trainees include people that are long-term unemployed, former drug users, homeless but living in supported living, former prostitutes, ex-offenders, refugees, and people with physical or learning difficulties.

By securing training delivery contracts with organisations including Jobcentre Plus, Learning Skills Council, and Birmingham City Council, Jericho CIC is able to provide its trainees with work experience or skills training with individually tailored personal development programmes that address specific needs and barriers to employment.

The majority of Jericho CIC’s clients are third sector and public sector organisations, including Centre for Values, BVSC, and Friends of the Earth.
