Jericho Community Business Ltd
Jericho Community Business provides training and paid work placement opportunities to people who are disadvantaged in the employment market. Since it was established in 1998 from a successful outreach project, it has helped hundreds of people across Birmingham find work.
Specifically its services are targeted towards people who face barriers when seeking work for a variety of reasons including financial pressures, lack of education, low social status, inadequate housing or poor health. Over 60% of the people assisted by the enterprise are of Asian and African Caribbean origin and a very high proportion have low or no qualifications.
Jericho Community Business' objective is to help these people overcome employment barriers and secure full-time jobs by providing them with a friendly and trusting environment in which they can learn new skills and gain experience. It also offers frequent counselling, professional guidance and support to increase confidence and rebuild self-esteem.
To deliver its services, Jericho Community Business has established several business activities that generate income while creating a wide range of training and placement opportunities for those it seeks to assist.
They include:
| • |
A not-for-profit professional print service that produces printed products such as leaflets, posters, and promotional items including mouse-mats, mugs and key-rings. It also offers a garment embroidery service |
| • |
A professional web design service that specialises in providing highly affordable website solutions for small businesses and individuals |
| • |
A building repairs and maintenance service that also offers
decoration, plumbing and electrical services |
| • |
A catering service and sandwich bar that can provide food for
corporate buffets |
Trading activities generate around 30% of Jericho Community Business' annual income, with other income gained through running government employment contracts, such as New Deal or Next Steps Skills Coaching. The project also receives a substantial amount of funding through the European Social Fund.
